🌟 Introduction
Welcome back to Learn Crochet from Zero!
In Episode One, you mastered the chain stitch, the foundation of all crochet projects.
Now, in Episode Two, we’ll take the next exciting step — learning the Single Crochet (sc) stitch.
This is your first true stitch — the one that turns your chain into fabric. Once you learn it, you’ll be able to make small squares, scarves, blankets, and so much more.
🧰 What You’ll Need
-
Yarn: Smooth, medium-weight yarn (same type used in Episode One)
-
Crochet Hook: 4.0 mm – 5.5 mm, matched to your yarn
-
Scissors
-
A chain foundation row (from Episode One — about 15–20 chains)
💡 Tip: Continue using light-colored yarn so you can easily see your stitches
🔗 Step-by-Step: How to Make a Single Crochet Stitch
Step 1: Insert the Hook
-
Skip the first chain from the hook.
-
Insert your hook into the second chain.
-
You’ll see two small loops on top of the chain — slide under both.

Step 2: Yarn Over (YO)
-
Wrap the yarn from back to front over your hook.
-
You now have three loops on your hook.

Step 3: Pull Through
-
Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.
-
You’ll have one loops on your hook.

✨ Helpful Tips
-
Keep your tension even — not too tight or loose.
-
Always count your stitches to ensure straight edges.
-
Practice several rows until your fabric looks even and neat.
-
Turn your work at the end of each row and chain 1 before starting the next.
🧵 Practice Exercise
Crochet 5 rows of 15 single crochet stitches.
Observe how the fabric becomes thicker and more stable than your first chain — that’s your first real crochet fabric!
📘 What’s Next
In Episode Three, we’ll explore the Half Double Crochet (hdc) — a stitch that’s taller, softer, and perfect for blankets and sweaters.
Keep practicing your single crochet until you feel comfortable before moving on.
